  • Construction of Durham cathedral began in 1093, and took forty years to complete.
For that period of time, this was a remarkable feat.
The treasures of Durham Cathedral include relics of St Cuthbert, the head of St Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede.
From 1080 until the 19th century the bishops were entitled prince-bishops, having military as well as religious leadership.
Signposts for the modern day County Durham are nowadays subtitled "Land of the Prince Bishops."
